Substrate Requirements

Unfinished solid wood, engineered wood, wood veneer, bamboo, or cork.

Moisture content must be below 20%.

Substrate Repair

Small defect or hole can be filled with normal wood filler mixed with 50%~60% wood sawdust. Do not apply filler on large surface, otherwise the surface will be sealed and prevent oil penetration.

Sanding

Sand wood with sandpaper 120~240# and remove dust thoroughly. Too fine surface will slow the drying and make it difficult to be stained.

Tips:

1.If finer surface desired, after first coat is dry, polish with polish pad.

2. If the unfinished surface is already too fine, wet the surface slightly with damp cloth. After dry, sand with 120~240#

substrate clean

Remove sand dust thoroughly. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of grease or frost.

Tinting

(if tinting is not desired, please skip this step)
Add one can of 0.16L Tinting Color into one can of 2.5L Hard Wax Oil or Clear Oil. Mix thoroughly. Then a tinted Hard Wax Oil or tinted Clear Oil is ready and can be used as wood stain. Tinting result according to this proportion (nearly 10% by weight) is shown as Standard Color-tinted Hard Wax Oil in Color Shade

For deeper or lighter color, adjust adding proportion of Tinting Color. Normally adding proportion is no recommended to exceed 30% otherwise the drying would be significantly slow.

Tips: To maintain original wood color after apply oil on

light color wood (oak, pine), it is recommended to tint oil slightly with tinting color white 806 or birch 533.

For very deep color, try the following methods

1. wipe Opaque Oil one coat to achieve stain effect

2. dilute Tinting Color with thinner at ratio 1:1, then add about 20% hard wax oil as binder. Use this mixture as stain

Mixing

Mix the oil thoroughly before use

Tools

Cotton cloth, stiff bristle brush, roller or buffing machine (recommended for floor)

Application

for DIYer

(1) Apply oil thinly along wood grain with cotton cloth, stiff bristle brush or roller. Leave it absorb for a while, say 15~30minutes. Then remove the surplus oil before it gets hardened. For better result, buff the wet surface with cotton cloth or nylon pad.

(2) Keep good ventilation, otherwise drying will be very slow and abnormal.

(3) After first coat is dry (normally overnight, drying time as per technical data sheet of relevant product), polish the surface with polish pad if smoother surface is desired. Remove dust thoroughly and apply the second coat with the same method described in (1).

Tips:

For the inside part of furniture, where ventilation is poor, use fast drying oil, for example hard wax oil 5300, 5301or natural oil 9430 and apply only one coat. Better assembly after try.

Tips:

Besides insufficient ventilation, too high humidity or temperature below 10ºC will also cause slow drying

For floor application with buffing machine

  1. (1) Apply oil evenly with brush, roller or scraper on the floor
  2. (2) Wait 2~3 hours, before it gets hardened, apply additional coat with the same method
  3. (3) Wait 30~60 minutes, buff with red or white pad at about 150rpm
  4. (4) Buff with cloth pad (or a cotton cloth placed over the pad) to remove surplus oil.
Oil Amount

No matter what tools or method, ensure the wood cannot absorb any more and there is no surplus. Normally two coats are enough.

Tips:

Judgement:Drop water on the dry surface. If it forms water beading, the surface is in good water resistance and shows oil amount applied is sufficient.

Additional Instruction for outdoor

Do not apply oil outdoor 24 hours before or after rain.

Full Hardening

After dry, the coating will reach its highest hardness in about 2 weeks. During this period, keep ventilation and avoid wet cleaning or heavy traffic. Do not cover with carpet.

Safety

To avoid danger of spontaneous-combustion, any used cloth must be washed out or soaked in water immediately.

Leftover Oil

Lleftover oil should be stored with tight seal to avoid skinning. If possible, use smaller can. In case of skinning, remove skin and mix well before use. If it is too thick, it can be thinned a little with Biohouse SuperClean thinner.
